Planning the Perfect Pacific Coast Road Trip

If you find yourself on the Pacific Coast and have some time set aside to explore, consider cruising the Pacific Coast Highway. The 656 mile stretch starting in Dana Point in Orange County and ending at the US 101 in Mendocino County is a must-do for all road trip lovers, and has many stops along the way to make it an unforgettable journey. Read on for our four favorite pit-stops.

The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

Undoubtably one of the most iconic landmarks in the golden state (perhaps even the country!), the Golden Gate Bridge is a must for anyone road-tripping their way through California. Completed in 1937 and once the longest suspension bridge in the world, the bridge is free to the thousands of visitors who walk or cycle across it daily. There are sidewalks for walkers a cyclists on each side of the bridge, and free walking tours are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays by the non-profit group “City Guides”.

Point Sur Lighthouse, Big Sur

Located atop of volcanic rock along the Big Sur shoreline, the Point Sur Lighthouse is an absolute must-see in California. The lighthouse offers uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountain range, and the area is part of the California State Historic Park. Free tours are offered on a first come, first serve basis on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Solvang, Santa Barbara County

Located in Santa Barbara county, Solvang is a Danish town full of heart and perfect for those wanting to visit a picturesque small town during the PCH roadtrip. Founded in 1911, the town offers Danish architecture, several museums and quaint shopping, and a convenient trolley to get around. If you need a sweet-tooth fix, there are many Danish bakeries ready to welcome you next time you stop over in Solvang.

Malibu Pier, Malibu

Malibu is a well-known location frequented by tourists and celebrities alike, but don’t let the crowds scare you off; this destination lives up to the hype. After spending the day on one of the beaches that dot the Malibu shoreline, head to the Pier for dinner at one of two restaurants: Malibu Farm Restaurant & Bar or Malibu Farm Cafe to take in the beautiful sunset. This is a picure-perfect way to end you PCH road trip!
