Six Multi-Generational Adventure Trips that are Perfect for Families

If the last two years have taught us anything, it is to cherish time with our families and make memories when we can.  Multi-generational trips don’t have to be limited to a week at the beach or a visit to a Disney Resort. While those trips no-doubt create lifelong memories with your loved ones, sometimes it’s nice to think outside of the box when it comes to family travel.  Read on to learn about six family experiences (three domestic and three international) to consider next time you get the whole gang together!

International Travel Options for Multi-Generational Families:

Scotland/Ireland

In the summer of 2019, Laura, our brother, Craig, and I took our Dad on a family lineage trip to Scotland and Ireland.  A quick direct flight from Chicago, Illinois, brought us to Edinburgh, Scotland; a city with history, charm, and some of the nicest locals we have ever encountered.  From there we rented a car and took a day trip south to Thornhill, a small town where our father’s great-great-great grandfather lived. We visited Morton Parrish Church, which he helped build, and walked to the cemetery where he and many other Hastings relatives are buried.

Other highlights of our time in Scotland and Ireland included a hired driver who drove us north for a day (we loved the Highland Cows and Lochs!), and a surprising day train trip in Ireland to see the Bray Waterfall and the staggering Powerscourt Estate.

While we didn’t take kids on this trip, the ease of transportation (specifically the train system and hiring a driver…we wouldn’t recommend renting a car as the roads are narrow and it’s difficult to drive and see the countryside) and friendly locals rank it high on our list of an experience all ages can enjoy.

New Zealand Road Trip

If your family is of the adventurous type, a road trip through New Zealand might be just right for you.  The country is compact enough that it can be driven and enjoyed in a span of a couple of weeks.  For families who love being one with nature and hiking, side trips to Stewart Island/Rakiura, Fiordland, or Tongariro National Park all have excellent trails. Experience beautiful scenery, rare animal sightings, and more on a road trip through New Zealand.

Canadian Railway Trip

With train lovers in almost every family, what better way is there to bring the old and young together than on a cross country adventure through the beautiful Canadian Rockies?  With endless experience options spanning from a short, minimal night voyage to excursions that are several weeks long, there are trips for every type of family and budget.  From your seat aboard a comfortable sleeper train, watch as the urban areas of Torranto and Ottawa break up the expansive landscape of national parks and small alpine towns. This is sure to be a trip you will always remember.

Domestic Travel Options for Multi-Generational Families:

Pennsylvania History Trail

History can bring generations together in a way that not much else can.  Pennsylvania is home to some of our country’s most historical landmarks, and what better way to experience them than with a multi-age group excursion across the great state!

Gettysburg

Watch Civil War battle reenactments at Gettysburg National Military park and then head three hours east to Philadelphia: home to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the National Constitution Center. Watch history come to life through the eyes of your family members in Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia

Montana Dude Ranch

If you are a fan of the hit television series “Yellowstone”, a Dude Ranch experience might be right up your alley.  The Big Sky State is an ideal family destination for laid back families who love the outdoors.  With dozens of ranches to choose from (and many with five star reviews!), some have a more rustic feel and others offer all the modern amenities; there is bound to be one meant for your crew.  Ride horses, enjoy nature, and more in “The Last Best Place”: Montana.
